Shortbread cookies have a rich history that dates back to medieval Scotland. They are believed to have evolved from a medieval biscuit bread, which was a type of twice-baked biscuit made from leftover bread dough. The first printed recipe for shortbread appeared in 1736 and was written by a Scottish woman named Mrs. McLintock. However, shortbread was likely being enjoyed in Scotland as early as the 12th century. The refinement of shortbread is often credited to Mary, Queen of Scots, in the 16th century.

Ida’s recipe dates back to her great-great grandmother from Germany in the 1840s.
