Pound cake originated in Britain and Europe during the 18th century. Its name comes from the original recipe, which used one pound each of flour, butter, sugar, and eggs. This simple recipe was easy to remember without needing exact measurements.
Over time, recipes changed to make the cake lighter and more flavorful. Baking powder, vanilla, citrus, and other ingredients were added, and pound cake became especially popular in the United States. Today, the name “pound cake” refers to the style of cake rather than the original one-pound measurements. At Ida's, we follow Nan's original recipe from 1937.
